Download sites are popular targets for misleading ads and fake buttons. A few habits keep your device and accounts safe.
Before you download
- Check the address bar. Make sure you are on the site you meant to visit, and that it uses https.
- Be wary of look-alike buttons. Ads often imitate “Download”. The real button is part of the tool’s own page, not a flashing banner.
- Avoid installing extra software just to download a file. Most good tools work directly in the browser.
While you use the tool
- Do not enter passwords or payment details on a downloader.
- Close pop-ups instead of clicking them.
- Do not allow notifications from sites you do not know.
After you download
- Check the file type. A video should end in .mp4 or similar, not .exe or .apk.
- Scan unfamiliar files with your device’s security software.
- Keep your browser and operating system updated.
Respect copyright
Downloading is only appropriate for content you own, that is in the public domain, or that the owner has permitted. Many platforms’ terms also limit downloading. When in doubt, ask for permission or use the platform’s own save feature where offered.
If something goes wrong
If you installed something suspicious, disconnect from the internet, run a security scan, remove unknown apps and change important passwords from a clean device.
